Why Potholes Form
Potholes form when water seeps into cracks in the road surface. During Canadian winters, this water freezes and
expands, breaking the asphalt apart. Traffic then wears away the weakened surface, creating holes that grow over
time. Spring thaw is the worst season for potholes across Canada, particularly in Atlantic Canada, Quebec,
Ontario, and the Prairies.
